Dr. Zeisel is President of the I’m Still Here Foundation and Hearthstone Alzheimer Care, Ltd.. Hearthstone manages six unique assisted living treatment residences for people living with dementia in northeastern US. After receiving his doctorate in Sociology from Columbia University and a Loeb Fellowship degree from Harvard's Graduate School of Design in the early 1970s, Dr. Zeisel’s academic career brought him to several universities. He first taught at Yale University and at Montreal's McGill University, then spent eight years on the Harvard Architecture School faculty where he taught research methods, housing issues, and social factors in studio design. In 1994 he was selected as the Cass Gilbert Visiting Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University of Minnesota, and in 2003 he was awarded a CAMPUS Visiting Fellowship at Salford University’s Centre for the Built and Human Environment in the UK, being appointed Visiting Professor at Salford University’s School of the Built Environment in 2005. In 2011 he was appointed Professor at the University of Wollongong in Australia. Dr. Zeisel lectures internationally and has taught regularly at the Business School of the University of Quebec at Montreal, the Harvard University Graduate School of Design Executive Education Program, and the University of Montreal’s School of Planning.
Dr. Zeisel received the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) Career Award for his life’s work in environmental design and research in 1998 and was honored by appointment to the Board of Directors of the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture in 2005. He has received numerous other awards and citations for programming and assessing health care facilities, seniors housing, family housing, office buildings and schools from, Places, Progressive Architecture, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Massachusetts Council for the Arts and Humanities, the American Institute of Architects, and the National Association of Home Builders.
Articles by and about Dr. Zeisel have appeared in The London Times, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Gerontologist, Harvard Magazine, O: Oprah Magazine, Landscape Architecture, Retirement Housing Reporter, The Wall Street Journal, Banker and Tradesman, AARP Bulletin, Progressive Architecture, Contract, The NAHB News, and Professional Builder. His 2004 Gerontologist article Environmental Correlates to Behavioral Health Outcomes in Alzheimer’s Special Care Units, demonstrating the treatment effects of the built environment, has been published in the French Revue de Gériatrie.
Dr. Zeisel is author of I’m Still Here: A New Philosophy of Alzheimer's Care, Penguin/Avery Books (2010). His textbook Inquiry by Design: Environment / Behavior / Neuroscience in Architecture, Interiors, Landscape, & Planning was published by W. W. Norton (2006.) Other books include Housing for Families, Independence through Interdependence: Congregate Housing for Older People, and Lowrise and Midrise Housing for Older People.
